Programming Power: Indigenous-Informed Climate Solutions

In a 2-part workshop package, students will venture outdoors to explore the land using Anishinaabe and Metis perspectives and see how nearby ecosystems are being affected by pollutants. In the second workshop, students will code Climate Action Kits to gain a deeper understanding of climate issues and develop technology-driven solutions informed by Indigenous practices. They’ll learn about real-life Indigenous scientists who are employing these solutions as climate activists. Teachers can sign up for either session, but we recommend registering for both, as the workshops will build off of each other with connected themes and concepts.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THIS WORKSHOP PACKAGE?

  • Two 90 minute workshops facilitated by TRACKS Instructors.
    • Workshop 1: In this workshop, students will venture outdoors to explore the land using Anishinaabe and Metis perspectives. Students will learn about the soil in their school yard and how pollutants can impact soil, plants, and animals in their neighbourhoods. They’ll learn how Indigenous scientists and activists are protecting plants and soils in Canada. Students will make scientific observations, play experiential games, and create their own piece of Metis dot art!
    •  Workshop 2: Indoors, students will practice coding, engineering, and Indigenous science! Students will use Climate Action Kits (think: lego, coding, and environmental sensing) to test soil samples they collected in workshop 1, along with samples from around Peterborough. They'll learn how soil moisture and pH can predict the health of entire ecosystems and how Indigenous scientists and the 7-generation principle can help protect damaged soil in Peterborough.
